Operating a Motorcycle in Colorado

In order to operate a motorcycle in the state of Colorado you must:

  • Meet the state’s minimum age requirement
  • Obtain a Colorado motorcycle license endorsement (you may also need to obtain a motorcycle instruction permit)
  • Register your motorcycle with the state of Colorado
  • Obtain insurance coverage that meets Colorado state requirements

Getting a Colorado Motorcycle License Endorsement

According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, in addition to meeting the requirements necessary to obtain a regular driver’s license, individuals must apply for a motorcycle license endorsement.

Motorcycle Education & Training in Colorado

Motorcyclists should sign up for a motorcycle safety course.  In Colorado, it is not mandatory to complete a motorcycle safety course to obtain a Colorado license endorsement, however anyone between 15 and 16 years old must complete a Motorcycle Operator Skills Training (MOST) program, and show proof of completion prior to receiving an instructional permit. Colorado Motorcycle Insurance Requirements
